As we began shaping this quarterly, one idea kept coming forward: what about the identity of an advisor when they aren’t advising? Being present and putting yourself first for clients is essential, yet being intentional and present in your business requires a different level of awareness. Your work extends far beyond individual relationships. Each day you guide clients through choices that influence their lives, and at the same time you make decisions that determine the direction of your business. These responsibilities often overlap and create a role that reaches well beyond the traditional definition of an advisor.
We chose the name PULSE because every business benefits from a moment to check its bearings. Advisors spend much of their time focused on clients, so it is easy to overlook the health of the business that supports the work. A pulse check brings attention back to the decisions, habits, and structures that determine how smoothly your business operates. It also reinforces that independent advisors are not simply service providers. You lead and make choices that shape the trajectory of a growing business. This is the core of an entrepreneurial mindset, and it distinguishes you within the profession. When you think and operate as an entrepreneur, your impact expands and your ability to guide clients with clarity becomes even stronger.
In this inaugural issue, we focus on the mindset that supports that perspective. You will find ideas on planning, clarity, intentional decision-making, and other topics that help you step back from the urgency of daily work long enough to see what deserves your attention next. The goal is to offer concepts that prompt reflection and open the door to intentional action.
Thank you for taking the time to explore this first edition. We hope PULSE becomes a steady companion as your business treks forward.

What’s so bad about going fast?

What’s so bad about going fast? Going too fast for too long can cause burn out. And running a business this way can essentially slow growth in the long-run. Runners understand this concept all too well. According to Carl Foster, Ph.D., an exercise scientist at University of Wisconsin, “The objective at any distance is to run out of whatever you have to give one step beyond the finish. To do that, you have to know exactly how to pace yourself.” You can’t finish strong when you are out of energy. Running a business is all about pace, but the rapid change in tech and customer expectations can put a drag on competitive advantage, and many times it can feel like you are barely keeping up.
Keep pace with support. Remember that Base Camp is here to help you keep pace. We are staying connected to the tech, the times, and our networks to bring you more options. When you start to feel the burnout, slow down, ask for help, and keep a steady pace forward.
